Fil-Am Home Care Owners Must Pay $1M in Back Wages, Damages

Dozens of workers denied minimum wage and overtime by the Filipino owners of nearly a dozen San Francisco Bay Area residential care facilities will get more than $1 million in back wages and damages as a result of two separate court rulings in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, reports Inquirer.net.

Filipina American nurse Allysha Almada settled with a hospital in Southern California that she said fired her for trying to start a union. Just shortly before a hearing with the National Labor Relations Board, Almada and another fired nurse reached a settlement with Huntington Hospital in Pasadena, which agreed to pay them nearly $30,000 each in back wages, reports Inquirer.net.

Filipino WWII veterans and her family members mourn the passing of Cpl. Magdalena Estoista Leones, 95, who entered the history books as the only Asian female to have been awarded the Silver Star in World War II for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States.
