Pottery and Pan de Sal

Pasil, a small town in the mountains of Kalinga province, is distinguished for two things: it's listed as part of the European slow food movement for its indigenous dishes, and  a barrio under its jurisdiction, Dangtalan, boasts of beautiful clay pottery shaped entirely by hand. In "A Village Called Dangtalan," Baguio-based contributor Lourdes Guieb-Demetillo gives us a glimpse of the cultural riches of this remote, little-known spot in northern Luzon.

Culinary historian Felice P. Sta. Maria returns with "Origins of our Daily Breads," which traces not only the etymology of the word "tinapay" but the evolution of Filipinos' love for "pan."

PF Correspondent Lisa Suguitan-Melnick writes about one of the stalwarts of the Filipino American community in San Francisco -- Juanita Tamayo-Lott, poet, activist, public policy expert, philanthropist, among other involvements. Surely a "Woman Warrior of the Golden State," who begins her 8th decade with yet another "reinvention" as she moves closer to her family in Seattle.

We celebrate another outstanding woman in the arts this week -- Nora Aunor, the Philippines' only superstar. Read Again "The Timeless Nora Aunor," the tribute written by film critic/cultural worker Mauro Feria Tumbucon Jr.

For the Happy Home Cook this week, our San Francisco-based foodie Voltaire Gungab comes up with another yummy recipe: Tablea Chocolate, Cashew and Coconut Cake.
