Female Warriors

We're having another webinar next week featuring five super-accomplished Filipino women in health care, all acclaimed in their respective fields, coming from different states: Hawaii, Washington, California, Illinois and New York. Each one played a significant role in mitigating the negative impact of the pandemic in their communities and they will share with us their stories and their work. Join us as we celebrate Women's History Month by honoring these "Filipina Power Warriors in the Pandemic Front Line" this coming Monday, March 22. Details and registration information below.

Our webinar last week, "We Are Not the Virus: Hate Crimes Against Asian Americans," triggered some visceral reactions from some attendees. If you missed it or would like to listen to it again, here's the recording of the event. http://www.positivelyfilipino.com/magazine/webinar-video-we-are-not-the-virus-hate-crimes-against-asian-americans

We also have some pretty consequential stories this week which we hope will inform, clarify, entertain and inspire.

Racism History

In answer to the many requests of those who attended the first of a series of Positively Filipino webinars on "Racism and the Filipino American," held on June 29, 2020, we are posting in this week's issue excerpts from Dr. Michael Gonzalez's presentation on "The Colonial Legacy of Racism Among Filipinos" plus answers to questions posted to him during the webinar that were not answered, due to time constraints.

Likewise, we have Atty. William Tamayo's slide presentation on "White Supremacy and Black Oppression in Law and Society," the US side of the racism issue. We are also posting Bill's answers to questions on this topic.

Our second webinar will be on Monday,  July 13 at 6 pm PDT/9pm EDT (9 am Tuesday July 14 in the Philippines). We hope you can join us for this very interesting -- and most likely difficult but definitely thought-provoking--conversation. Seats are filling up quickly so please register now at:  bit.ly/PFDifficultConversation

We also invite you to spend this Friday night (Saturday morning Manila time) with Martin Nievera, Lea Salonga, Regine Velasquez, Ogie Alcasid, Apl.de.Ap, Ryan Cayabyab and other musical stars for the virtual concert/fundraising of Philippine International Aid. See Partner post below for details. On this one there's no need to register. Just go to Martin Nievera's Facebook page at the designated time and enjoy.

Scandal and Good Deeds

When regular contributor Myles A. Garcia, a history buff, caught a whiff of the scandal from Down Under involving one of the biggest family fortunes in Australia, he immediately drew on his Internet sleuthing skills and trained his sights on the Filipina that was in the midst of it all. "How To Marry A Millionaire Aussie/Pinoy Style" dishes on the legal battle that had all the elements of a sordid telenovela, and includes a list of online information sources for those who want more of the story.

In New York in the meantime, the musicale "Here Lies Love" which focuses on Imelda Marcos, is creating waves and has branched out to London and will soon tour major American cities. Tricia J. Capistrano writes about the long-dormant emotions that the show resurrected for her.

Remember Carl and Clarence Aguirre, the conjoined twins from Negros Occidental who were successfully separated in 2004? It took more than a village to bring them to New York for their operation, and first-time contributor Carmen Sarmiento tells us the story of the men and women who worked together to make their journey possible. Read "The Aguirre Twins -- A Back Story Paid Forward."

In this week's blog, I write about growing up in UP, in "Childhood Reveries."

For "Video of the Week," pop singer Gary Valenciano surprises balikbayans on a flight home.

Hope your autumn is as colorful as the changing leaves.
