12 OFWs Abandoned By Korean Employer in Saudi

Twelve Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW's) who were hired by a Filipino agency in Ermita to work for a Korean company in Saudi Arabia have been dumped with no money, no food and no assistance from the agency when the Korean employers and staffers decamped, probably back to Seoul, reports Balita Pinoy.

Religious Women Form Anti-Trafficking Network

A formidable multibillion-dollar human-trafficking industry has driven Catholic religious women to collaborate among themselves and with other sectors of society to stop what Pope Francis has called "the most extensive form of slavery of the 21st century," reports the National Catholic Reporter. The anti-trafficking network of women religious has developed a program of activities in partnership with a central office in Rome as well as a network of local anti-trafficking teams.

Six of Seven Filipinos Killed in Yemen Identified

Six of the seven overseas Filipino workers who were killed in the terrorist attack on the Defense Ministry Complex in Yemen have been identified, reports ABS-CBN News. The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) identified the fatalities as Dr. Ruben Valenzuela, Marian David, Hezel Pueblos, Edward Anthony de Guzman, Marivic Corilla Badenas and Aurora Yumol Gormate who are nurses and medical workers.

Papua New Guinea Wants Filipino Teachers

Papua New Guinea is offering Filipino teachers and lecturers close to $20,000 a year to fill up an "urgent" requirement for qualified educators, reports GMA News. Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said the Pacific nation is looking for at least 81 teachers and lecturers as part of the initial phase of manpower recruitment under a newly-signed bilateral agreement between the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. 

Three Pinoys Star in Italian Movie

Three Filipino artists based in Rome were happy to be among the main cast of an Italian movie that made it to the Rome International Film Festival, reports ABS-CBN News. Hazel Morillo, Mark Manaloto and Kim de Quilla walked down the red carpet before the screening of the film called "Se Chiudo Gli Occhi Non Sono Pui Qui" (If I close my eyes I'm not here anymore). The film is directed by Vittorio Morione.

Canada Eyes 7,500 Foreign Caregivers

Thousands of Filipinos may have a chance not only to work as caregivers in Canada but also to live there through the Canadian government's , reports GMA News. Under the program, Canada will admit 17,500 foreign workers, including Filipinos, to work and live there, according to Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz.

Agencies to Help 500 Survivors Find Work Abroad

Five hundred workers from typhoon-hit areas will be recruited by two licensed recruitment agencies, free of charge, for employment overseas, reports ABS-CBN News. Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said Skills International Co., and International Skills Development (ISD), have committed to assist worker-victims of super typhoon Yolanda.

Aussie-Pinoy Golfer Eyes World's No. 1 Spot

Australian-Filipino Jason Day, who lost family members in the Philippines during Typhoon Haiyan, is so confident after winning the World Cup that he has his sights set on becoming world number one, reports Manila Standard Today. Day helped Australia win the World Cup team title for the first time in 24 years. He jumped to 11 in the world rankings.
