Pinoy Fishermen Rescued By Taiwan Are Back Home

Taiwanese coast guard  rescued three Filipino fishermen--Ronald Q. Dumaran, Edwin C. Zoilo and Hener Mendoza--in the high seas during a storm, inspiring goodwill on the heels of a spat over fishing rights between Manila and Taipei, reports Interaksyon.com. The three flew home early morning Tuesday at the Clark International Airport. Their boat encountered big waves near Kaohsiung island last July 17.

 

PH Lifts Ban on OFWs in Iraq

Nonstop Rain Floods Parts of Mindanao

Nonstop rain has widened the scope of floods in Mindanao, with 15 towns in Maguindanao province becoming virtual lagoons, reports Interaksyon.com. The Rio Grande de Mindanao rose swiftly over last weekend, affecting over 37,000 people in Maguindanao alone. Among the worst hit was the town of Sultan Kudarat, where 18 villages are under water. In Cotabato City, 25 of 37 barangays are flooded, affecting some 20,000 residents.

Two With Meth on Way to Clark Nabbed in Hong Kong

Hong Kong authorities on Monday announced the arrest of two women carrying more than a dozen kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, reports Inquirer.net. The women, sisters aged 27 and 31, were seized Sunday at Chek Lap Kok airport on their way to Clark in the Philippines. They were allegedly carrying 14.5 kilograms (32 pounds) of “ice” worth HK$10.9 million ($1.4 million). The drugs were found concealed inside false compartments of three suitcases carrying men’s clothing,

PH Extends Visa-Free Stay to 30 Days

Visiting nationals from 151 countries can spend more time in the Philippines--the government has extended the visa-free privilege for up to 30 days, reports ABS-CBN News. Starting August 1, foreign visitors can stay up to a month, instead of just 21 days. The move is aimed at encouraging more tourists and investors to come and visit.

China Expands Territorial Claim in West PH Sea

The Philippines has protested China's recent publication of a new "10-dash line" map that places sprawling offshore territories it claims within Beijing's "national boundaries," reports GMA News. The new Chinese map, which was first published last January by China's state mapping authority Sinomap Press, features 10 dash lines instead of nine dash lines, turning the West Philippine Sea into a virtual Chinese lake.
