300 Pinoys in Rome Protest China's "Bullying"

Some 300 Filipinos in Rome, Italy took a time out from their work Thursday to hold a protest rally against China’s “intrusion” in the West Philippine Seas (South China Sea), reports Inquirer.net. Organized by various Filipino communities in Rome, the peaceful rally was held at the historic plaza of Piazza Del Popolo,  one of the city’s main tourist spots.

 

PH Tops List of Nations That Like U.S. the Most

Some  nations still have a soft spot for the U.S., reports Yahoo Finance. Of 39 nations where Pew conducted surveys, Filipinos have the most favorable impression of the U.S.: 1. Philippines (percentage with a favorable view of the United States: 85%); 2. Israel (83%); 3. Ghana (83%); 4. Senegal (81%); 5. Kenya (81%).

 

Fil-Am Faces Death Penalty in Texas

A  22-year-old Filipino, Gabriel Paul Hall,  is facing the death penalty in Texas  for allegedly  stabbing and shooting to death retired Texas A&M oceanography professor Edwin Shaar, 68, who used a walker, before turning to the victim’s wheelchair-bound wife, Linda Shaar, and slitting her throat inside their College Station home in October 2011 (GMANews.tv). The wife survived. Hall  was adopted from the Philippines at age 11 by local couple Karen and Wes Hall after he had spent six years in an orphanage. His murder trial set for Oct. 21.

Court Won't Honor US Ruling vs. Marcos

The Makati Regional Trial Court (RTC) has dismissed Priscilla Mijares et al.’s petition to enforce in the Philippines an 18-year-old United States District Court decision awarding some $2 billion from the Marcos estate to victims of human rights violations during the late dictator’s administration, reports Inquirer.net.


Fil-Canadian Boy Now a Recording Artist

From being a finalist on reality show "The Next Star," Filipino-Canadian Darren Espanto is now a recording artist, reports ABS-CBN News. His first single is a Jackson 5 cover "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)". It was recently released on iTunes and his music video can now be seen on YTV.com. Espanto said he didn't expect this to happen since he didn't win the competition. But the recording industry had other plans. He was flown back to Toronto to record five songs.

 

Italy's Economic Crisis Hits Immigrants Harder

Immigrants are being hit harder than Italians by the country's unemployment crisis, a new report showed Monday, saying the figures were "extremely worrying" and could lead to "major social destabilisation" (GMA News/AFP). The number of unemployed foreigners in Italy is currently 385,000, up from 220,000 at the beginning of the economic crisis in 2008. The jobless rate among immigrants is 14.1 percent,a 5.6-point increase from 2008. The national jobless rate is at a record high of 12.2 percent.
