High Breast Cancer Rate Linked to Manila's Toxic Air?

A 2009 study by a published in the Asian Pacific Journal for Cancer Prevention confirmed that the Philippines has one of the highest incidences of breast cancer in Asia, reports Inquirer.net. The paper also showed that breast cancer incidence in seven cities in Metro Manila was much higher than in 14 cities and municipalities in Rizal province, which could be linked to the concentration of certain airborne toxic substances in Metro Manila.

Filipino Documentary Nominated for Emmy

"Give Up Tomorrow," a documentary film about a Filipino-Spanish teenager who was convicted in a 1997 massacre case, has been nominated for the prestigious Emmy Award, reports ABS-CBN News. The documentary, produced by Filipino Marty Syjuco and directed by American filmmaker Michael Collins, is nominated in the News and Documentary competition.

 

Hong Kong Site Blacklisting Helpers Shut Down

A social media group page that set up a "blacklist" of some 200 foreign domestic workers has been shut down by Facebook administrators on charges that it violated Hong Kong's privacy law, reports SunWeb.com. Facebook also suspended for 12 days the accounts of the four Chinese employers who allegedly started the page. 

 

Supreme Court Invalidates Four National Artist Awards

The Philippine Supreme Court invalidated and set aside a July 2009 order by then-President Gloria Arroyo conferring the National Artist award on Cecille Guidote-Alvarez, filmmaker Carlo Magno Jose Caparas, architect Francisco "Bobby" Mañosa, and fashion designer Jose "Pitoy" Moreno, reports Rappler.com. Petitioners Virgilio Almario and Bienvenido Lumbera, both National Artists, and many others, insisted that the award was illegal since the four were not among the nominees shortlisted by the National Commission on Culture and Arts and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). Arroyo completely altered the shortlist to accommodate the four, they added.

A bemedalled children's choir from Cubao, Quezon City, bagged the top awards in a musical festival held in North Wales, United Kingdom, besting several other groups from various countries, reports Philstar.com.

 

IMF Raises PH Economic Growth Forecast

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Wednesday announced that it now sees the Philippine economy growing by 7 percent, better than the previous forecast of 6 percent, reports Inquirer.net. The better outlook for the Philippines was announced following the release of new forecasts for the global economy and other Southeast Asian markets, which are now all expected to grow at a slower pace.

 

11 Filipinos Get Prestigious UK Scholarship

The British government recently awarded the prestigious Chevening Scholarship to  11 Filipinos who will pursue studies in finance and economics, environment and sustainability, trade, health and law in the United Kingdom, reports GMA News. The 2013 Chevening Scholars are: Christine Antonio, Grace Ayson, Naealla Bainto, Ryan Edward Chua, Anna Victoria Lu, Jan Christopher Ocampo, Maria Isabel Plaza, Ira Paulo Pozon, Joyce Tan, Andrea Teran and Donn Mc Angelo Valdez.
