Filipinos Are Biggest Number of Aliens Held in Japan

Filipinos are the largest number of foreign nationals detained in Japan for violations of its immigration laws, reports Inquirer.net. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said there were around 200 Filipinos detained in Japanese immigration centers. Last July 6, Japan deported 75 Filipinos to the Philippines.

A Filipino restaurant is the toast of the town after Guy Fierri took his hit Food Network show "Diners, Drive Ins and Dives" to Park's Finest, a Fil-Am owned restaurant specializing in Filipino cuisine fusion with backyard-style barbecue, reports ABS-CBN News. Fieri brought along special guests, Hollywood stars of "Grown Ups 2" Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, Kevin James and David Spade. Cornbread bibingka, created by one of the owners as she was trying to improve cornbread, was the biggest hit among the A-list comedians.

 

PH Grade School Math Team Wins Int'l Contest

With a 16-medal haul, the Philippine elementary mathematics team--mostly students from private schools in Metro Manila-- topped the primary division in the just-ended 2013 Bulgaria International Math Competition (BIMC), held June 30 to July 4 in the Black Sea city of Burgas, reports Inquirer.net. The young Filipino math wizards bagged three gold, four silver, four bronze and five merit medals in the annual competition. The teams from Vietnam and Thailand placed second and third overall.

 

Filipinos Hurt in Asiana Plane Crash

There were Filipinos on board the Asiana Flight 214 that crashed on the San Francisco International Airport runway just before noon on Saturday, killing two people and injuring more than 180 others, reports ABS-CBN News. Among those who survived were elderly couple Ruben and Belen Vallero, who were treated for broken ribs and liver laceration. Maricel Anino-Knaus, 38, and her two sons, 7-year old George, 5-year old Gabriel were also on that plane and sustained injuries.

 

Pinay Among Alleged Burglars Arrested in UAE

Police arrested a seven-member gang--six Georgians and one Filipina--that carried out daytime burglaries by breaking and entering through doors and windows of the targeted houses, before heading to their hideout to split the loot, reports Khaleej Times. Recovered were stolen items including jewelry, precious stones and watches valued at more than Dh1 million.

 

Filipinos Among People Who Read the Most--Study

A new study by the World Culture Score Index has determined the number of hours spent reading by individuals around the world and found that people in the Asian countries of India, Thailand, China and the Philippines spend the most time reading, reports PolicyMic.  Another interesting finding was that that group of industrialized, first world countries including Spain, Canada, Germany, the U.S., and Italy reported relatively low rates of reading.

Nurse in Dubai Now a Hit Recording Artist

Filipina nurse and laser therapist Mariella “Yelle” Gutierrez Castro, 24, has a new-found career--recording artist. She  has just released two tracks, Bubble and Escape, on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and opm2go, all top music download websites. Bubble is at No. 14 on the popular online Filipino music countdown (www.myxph.com) and No. 21 on iTunes Philippines. “I’m planning to continue working as a nurse and laser therapist,”  Yelle, who works at the Dubai Medical Village in Jumeirah, told Gulf News.

 

Anti-Divorce Bill Filed in PH Congress

Divorce could be one of the major battles in the 16th Congress, with the early refiling of a bill opposing, reports Inquirer.net. Marikina Rep. Marcelino Teodoro  refiled his “antidivorce and unlawful dissolution of marriage” bill, which he says is intended to protect marriage as an inviolable social institution and of the family as the foundation of the nation.
