Australia, Canada Nix Travel to Parts of Southern PH

Australia and Canada warned Wednesday of fresh threats of terrorism and kidnapping in the southern Philippines, barring their diplomats from travelling to three cities in the area, reports Manila Standard Today. They also urged their citizens not to travel to large parts of the Mindanao region, with the Australian government specifically barring its diplomats from the cities of Davao, Cotabato and Zamboanga.

Narcita Mallari, A 46-year-old Pinay nurse of Cherry Hinton, Cambridge, pleaded guilty to two counts of illegal money lending and has been sentenced to nine months in prison, suspended for 18 months, following a hearing at Cambridge Crown Court, reports BalitaPinoy.net.


 

PH Is Third Top Sender of Immigrants Globally

The Philippines is the third top sender of immigrants abroad, the International Organization on Migration (Asian Journal). Filipinos make up 3.1 percent of the total population of immigrants worldwide. As of 2011, there were 10,455,788 overseas Filipinos. The top ten destination countries of Filipino permanent immigrants are United States of America, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, Japan, Italy, Germany, Spain, New Zealand and Austria. 

 

China Executes Filipina Drug Mule

China today executed a Filipina found guilty of heroin smuggling in 2011, reports Inquirer.net. The death sentence was carried out despite an appeal from Philippine president Benigno Aquino III to have her sentence commuted to life imprisonment.

France to Honor Filipino Filmmaker as "Chevalier" of Arts

Filmmaker Brillante Mendoza will be named a Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) by France, reports Inquirer.net. Ambassador  Gilles Garachon said Mendoza personifies the rebirth of Philippine cinema. 



 

Family Visits Pinay on China Death Row

The family of the 35-year-old Filipina sentenced to death in China for drug smuggling was able to finally talk with her Monday in Jejang detention center in Hangzhou, reports Inquirer.net. The family was able to talk with her for 30 minutes and then proceed to the Chechang men's prison to visit her cousin, who was also sentenced to death but was given a two-year reprieve for good behavior.


4,000 OFWs Deployed to Saudi Arabia in 1st Quarter

The Philippine Overseas Employment Authority said that at least 4,000 Filipino workers were deployed to Saudi Arabia in the first quarter of 2013, reports Manila Standard Today. The increase in the deployment of household workers was propelled by the new agreement between the Philippines and Saudi Arabia guaranteeing safeguards and additional benefits for Filipina domestic helper.

 

Overworked Filipina in Canada Wins Against Employer

A jury of the British Columbia Supreme Court found a man from Vancouver, Canada, guilty of human trafficking after forcing a Filipina nanny to work 16 hours every day, reports, the National Post. Franco Yiu Kwan Orr was also found guilty of employing Filipina Leticia Sarmiento illegally and making a "misrepresentation that could induce an error in the administration of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act."
