29 Would-Be Mail Order Brides Rescued

Acting on complaints from the victims themselves, police on  June 26 rescued 29 women who were duped into  a mail-order bride scheme with Korean men, reports Rappler.com. Police raided a house at St Andrea Village 2, Brgy Panapaan, Bacoor, Cavite, and arrested three Filipinos and two Korean nationals, who were purportedly members of a syndicate.

 

PHL to Send Women Officers to Mideast in Wake of Scandal

The government will be deploying female welfare officers to its labor offices abroad, particularly in the Middle East, where several Philippine labor and embassyy officials have been accused of committing sexual abuses on female Filipino migrant workers, reports GMA News Online. Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said the female welfare officers will oversee distressed female overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who are victims of the abuses and assist them in their cases.

BARCELONA - When one visits Plaza Real in Barcelona, one cannot help but notice a long line of people, mostly tourists, waiting to get inside a restaurant famous for its Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant Les Quinze Nits known for its paella and tapas now offers lumpiang sariwa, tinola, kaldereta and other Filipino dishes, reports ABS-CBN News. Their menu "Es más divertida la comida Filipina" (Filipino food is more fun) may sound very Spanish but it offers a four-course meal entirely Filipino.

 

8 of 10 Pinoys Affected By Climate Change--Study

A World Bank-commissioned study revealed that eight out of 10 Filipinos “personally experienced” the impacts of climate change in the last three years, reports GMA News Online. The study conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) disclosed that 85 percent of respondents claimed to have suffered from climate change. Of this figure, more than half or 54 percent described their experience as “severe” to “moderate.”

 

PH to Revamp Diplomatic Posts in Middle East

MANILA – Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert Del Rosario vows a sweeping revamp in Philippine diplomatic posts in the Middle East, reports ABS-CBN News. Del Rosario is personally leading a probe into allegations that Philippine embassy officials and staff are exploiting and even prostituting distressed Filipino workers there.

Del Rosario met with four alleged victims of abuse on Friday.

 

DFA Launches Hotlines for "Sexploitation" Complaints

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Thursday announced hotlines where overseas Filipino workers can report incidents of "sexploitation," reports GMA News Online. DFA spokesman Raul Hernandez announced the hotlines — mobile, landline, and email — on his Twitter account Thursday afternoon. "Any complaint re sexual abuses committed in Philippine embassy or consulate, pls call 0928-8363756 / (632)834-4955 or email to contact@dfa.gov.ph," he said.

 

Filipino Workers "Exploited" by 7-Eleven Stores?

The U.S. Department of Justice said employees of several 7-Eleven convenience stores spread across Long Island in New York and Norfolk, Virginia were exploited, their wages stolen and were required to live in unregulated boarding houses, reports GMA News Online. U.S. authorities have not yet released the names of the more than 50 employees who included a still undetermined number of Filipinos.
