Defenses: Civil Rights and Martial Arts

President Trump put his order to conduct raids in major cities to ferret out the undocumented for deportation on hold for two weeks, and that two weeks will end on July 6. Immigration lawyer Lourdes Tancinco puts together a guide on what to do if ICE knocks on your door. (Our Partner Post: "Are ICE Raids Really on Hold? Know Your Rights")

Ireland's Filipinos

Like our kababayans in countries where the community is still small, the Filipinos in Ireland make extra efforts to create a semblance of the homeland in a strange country. Researcher/academic Diane Sabenacio Nititham shares the results of her study of Filipinos in the land of breweries and the green shamrock, who draw on the strength of language, rituals, food and the Catholic church to establish community. [Read "A Filipino Community Grows in Ireland"]

Meanwhile in the San Francisco Bay Area where Filipinos abound, another academic Mariel Toni Jimenez hits upon a universal truth: Filipinos and dancing are psychically entwined, and our senior kababayans are all the healthier for this. [Read "Dances With Manangs"]

Musician/composer Florante Aguilar recently staged his latest concert, UTOM, which harnessed the unique sounds and beat of traditional instruments to tell the stories of the T'boli tribe of Lake Sebu in South Cotabato. PF Correspondent Lisa Suguitan Melnick was there to document the event. [Read "Utom Unfolds T'boli Myths Through Music"]

For the Happy Home Cook, here's a sweet recipe that harkens back to summers in the Philippines: Pineapple Upside-Down Cake from the late culinary great, Nora Daza.
