The Mock Mayor tradition dates back to the aftermath of the Siege of Gloucester in 1643, when Barton lay beyond the city boundaries. In playful defiance, residents elected their own “mayor.” What began as satire has since evolved into a beloved civic custom celebrating humor, heritage, and local identity.
O’Flynn, a Filipina-British entrepreneur, writer, artist, and community leader, also serves as secretary of the Filipino Association of Gloucestershire. Known for her tireless dedication to cultural and community work, she pledged to bring joy, inspiration, creativity, and togetherness to her term as Mock Mayor.
Gloucester Day itself was once again enlivened by the efforts of Alan Myatt, the city’s legendary Town Crier and long-time event organizer, whose leadership helped deliver another celebration that honored Gloucester’s storied past while uniting its diverse communities.
Carrying this spirit forward, O’Flynn will host the FUNtastic Fair on Saturday, 15 November, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.at St Mary de Crypt. The free family event will feature stalls, entertainment, and interactive activities, showcasing Gloucester’s creativity and cultural diversity. The fair also coincides with the Gloucester Lantern Parade and Christmas Lights Switch-On, making it one of the highlights of the city’s festive calendar.

“The FUNtastic Fair will be a chance to celebrate what makes Gloucester special,” O’Flynn said. “I look forward to welcoming everyone to take part.”
With her passion for culture and collaboration, O’Flynn’s tenure as Mock Mayor promises to bring fresh energy to this enduring tradition—ensuring Barton’s voice continues to be heard and celebrated as part of Gloucester’s vibrant future.
All are warmly invited to the FUNtastic Fair on Saturday, 15 November, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at St Mary de Crypt, Southgate Street, Gloucester, GL1 1TP.
