Vicky Tauli-Corpuz, an Igorot from the Kankana-ey tribe in Besao, Mountain Province, has been chosen as the United Nations' Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous people, the first woman and indigenous Filipina to assume the position. 

As a special rapporteur, Corpuz will monitor the human rights situations of various indigenous peoples (IP) worldwide, report to governments the violations of their rights, and establish good practices on indigenous rights protection. From Rappler.com.

US Court slaps $353M Contempt Judgment on Bongbong, Imelda Marcos

Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., and his mother, Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos, have kept mum on a record $353.6 million contempt judgment handed down by the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit against them, reports Inquirer.net. It's the largest ever award for a contempt case — for violating a US court order not to dissipate their assets, which have been earmarked as compensation for victims of the martial law imposed by Ferdinand Marcos Sr. in the 1970s.

Endangered Philippine Eagle Wounded in Davao

An endangered monkey-eating eagle which was released into the wild under a conservation program is now fighting for survival after being shot, a Philippine conservation group said Wednesday.

The meter-long (3.3-foot) raptor named “Matatag”, which preys on macaques and other small animals sharing its forest habitat, was shot in Barangay Tambobong in Davao City at the weekend. See more on Interaksyon.com.
