China is standing pat on its call for the Philippines to release its fishermen arrested for poaching in the West Philippine Sea last week as local authorities in Palawan pursued criminal cases against those detained, reports Inquirer.net. The poachers were caught in possession of several endangered  sea turtles.

OFW Sold in Jeddah

A distressed OFW in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia sent a text message to Bantay OFW saying she  worked as a domestic helper for  a year with one employer then she was “sold” to her second employer with whom is is still working, reports Inquirer.net.  The contract she signed stated that she would receive a monthly salary of 2,500 Saudi Riyal, but she’s only receiving SR 1,800, works for more than 12 hours and is not given days off. 

US to Let Some Spouses of H-1B Visa Holders Work

The Obama administration wants to let some spouses of high-skilled immigrants work in the United States, reports Inquirer.net/AP. The rule affects as many as 100,000 visa-holders trained in science, technology, engineering and math. The so-called H-1B visas for high-skilled workers are among the most sought after by high tech firms. Currently, dependents of H-1B visa holders are not given work permits.

Nurse from Negros Occidental Dies of MERS in Saudi
