Inflation Climbs; Eastern Visayas Hardest Hit

Inflation rose to 4.1 percent in April from 3.9 percent in March due to increases in the price of food, electricity and fuel, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), reports Philstar.com/Xinhua.  Eastern Visayas in central Philippines, which bore the brunt of typhoon Haiya recorded the highest inflation rate among the regions in the country at 7.2 percent.

Member states of the European Union have rejected the proposed ban on Filipino seafarers, according to the International Association of Independent Tanker Owners (Intertanko), reports Inquirer.net. EU member states have endorsed the recommendation from the European Commission (EC) not to de-recognize the Filipino seafarers’ certificates of competency.

The number of poor Filipinos dropped amid the scorching economic growth in the first half of last year, according to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), reports Interaksyon.com. NEDA said poverty incidence slipped to 24.9 percent in the first six months of 2013 from 27.9 percent in the same period of 2012.
