“Magellan,” written and directed by Lav Diaz, was chosen to represent the Philippines in the Academy Awards’ Best International Feature Film category. It’s an epic historical drama that first screened in Cannes 2025, and stars Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal as the early-16th-century Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan (See Manila Bulletin for story).
