Tribeca alum Eunice Lau's edgy and compelling documentary follows the narrative of rebellious sons of Asian immigrants seduced by gang life in the streets of Atlanta as they battle against racism and their parents’ unrealistic expectations to be the “model minority”. The film was an official selection of the New York Asian Film Festival in 2023 and is now available on Amazon and Tubi.

Visions / Panawin: Focus on Philippine Cinema

Sulo: The Philippine Studies Initiative at NYU and the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center are pleased to present this Fall season’s Panawin Philippine film series. After presenting Philippine film classics and indie masterworks, Panawin turns its focus on films by and about the Filipino diaspora.

The Philippine Social Security System (SSS) Representative Office in Los Angeles will conduct onsite SSS services for Overseas Filipinos in the Bay Area and Northern California on 30 November-1 December 2023 at the Philippine Center, 447 Sutter Street, San Francisco, California 94108.

UC Berkley is hosting a book talk with journalist Patricia Evangelista on November 17, Saturday, 6pm at the Morrison Library. Join Evangelista and Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies faculty member Lisandro Claudio to learn more about Evangelista’s experiences reporting and writing this book, which the New Yorker’s David Remnick acclaimed as a “journalistic masterpiece,” and author Andrew Solomon noted, “reveals the nature of unbridled cruelty with an insightfulness that I have not encountered since the work of Hannah Arendt.” Details here
