Trauma and Survival

We commemorate once again Bataan Day, honoring those who survived and those who did not make it during the Bataan Death March of 1942. Here is an excerpt from a book entitled Cadet, Soldier, Guerrilla Fighter written by a Death March survivor and US Army Bronze Star awardee Antonio A. Nieva. "Death of An Army" tells the story of those days of extreme hardship and desperation.

A fitting Read Again is Jon Melegrito's narrative on the first time he joined the re-enactment of the Bataan Death March in New Mexico to honor is late father, Gregorio, and other survivors.

Surviving trauma of a different kind is the underlying theme of Fil-Am author Grace Talusan's memoir, The Body Papers, winner of the 2017 Restless Books Prize for New Immigrant Writing. Patty Enrado, herself a novelist, reviews the book.

Enjoy Pork Humba, our Happy Home Cook recipe this week from regular contributor, Rene Astudillo.

And our Video of the Week is Janina Vela (who has about 600,000 followers) talking about the books that have changed her life or, at the very least, her thinking. A bit long but a fascinating episode from an impressive Filipino millennial.

Filipinas Who Inspire

PF Correspondent Cherie Querol Moreno focuses on Edith Superio Cabuslay ("She Wants You To Have a Healthier Lifestyle"), the Health Systems Program Services Manager of San Mateo County in California. The county includes Daly City where the largest concentration of Filipinos in the US resides.

Our Video of the Week zeroes in on Aimee Carandang-Gloria, the first Filipina commercial pilot who has since switched gears and now heads a foundation that trains OFWs as professional service providers.

A formidable Filipino in the news lately is former Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales. Read Again veteran journalist Marites Danguilan-Vitug's feature on this feisty, no-nonsense rule of law guardian. http://www.positivelyfilipino.com/magazine/2013/3/dont-mess-with-conchita-carpio-morales

Another Read Again for literature lovers: my column on Angela Manalang-Gloria, one of the Philippines' beloved women poets. http://www.positivelyfilipino.com/gemma/the-enigmatic-poetess

A new gathering place for Fil-Ams in San Francisco is the Filipino Cultural Center. Lorna Lardizabal Dietz, who sits on the board, tells us its genesis.

We're starting a new collection called Our Turn: Millennial Voices and, with this first contribution from Jazmine D. Tabili ("Maginhawang Buhay: A Nearly Impossible Dream for Tourism Workers"), we encourage the youth to tell their stories. Send them to positvelyfilipino01@gmail.com

Of Streets and Milestones

Can you go back to the street where you lived in your youth and recapture its magic? A writer returned to Teresa St. in Ermita where he spent his childhood years, and realized something profound. Read this endearing story of a time of innocence, "The Three 'Hills' of Teresa St.", that only a poet/author/teacher like Oscar Peñaranda can tell.

Author/publisher Cecilia Manguerra-Brainard reviews the latest collection of stories by internationally acclaimed author, Linda Ty-Casper, "A River, One-Woman Deep: Stories." Ty-Casper is considered one of the masters of Philippine literature who deftly situates her stories, novels and characters at various periods of historical ferment in the Philippines. This collection is set during the Estrada presidency, from 1998-2001.

Anyone who browses the web for good Filipino recipes would have clicked on one from Panlasang Pinoy, the YouTube site of food blogger Vanjo Merano, which has 1.6 million subscribers and gets 4.5 million visitors a month. PF Correspondent and food expert Elizabeth Ann Quirino  drills down on Merano's recipe for success in this week's Watch Out World feature.

And Merano graciously shares his recipe for Ginataang Salmon (Salmon in Coconut) for the Happy Home Cook.
