Table tennis player Josephine Medina handed the Philippines its first medal in the 2016 Rio Paralympics Monday, Sept. 12. Medina took the bronze medal in the women's singles class 8 division won by China's Mao Jingdian. France's Thu Kamkasimphou took home the silver medal. Medina's bronze win is the Philippines' first medal since 2000, reports ABS CBN News.

Lav Diaz’s new film, “Ang Babaeng Humayo” (Woman Who Left) won the prestigious Golden Lion award in the Main Competition of the 73rd Venice International Film, reports Inquirer.net. The Golden Lion (Leone d’Oro in Italain) is the highest prize given at what is considered the oldest film festival in the world.

Filipinos Are Happiest Workers in SE Asia -- Report

Online employment marketplace Jobstreet.com reported that Filipinos are the happiest workers in Southeast Asia with 73 percent of them happy with their jobs. Behind Filipinos were Indonesians (71 percent), Thai workers (61 percent), Vietnamese (60 percent) and Hong Kong (57 percent). On the other end, Malaysians and Singaporeans were rated the least satisfied with their jobs at 47 percent and 48 percent, respectively, reports Asian Journal.

 

 

Hong Kong Domestic Workers Demand: No More Doing Windows

Domestic workers have taken to the streets of Hong Kong to demand a ban on them being asked to clean windows in high-rise buildings. The demonstration came after the deaths of several helpers in recent months. They also called for a pay rise, a limit on working hours and better accommodation, reports BBC.

Filipino American broadcast journalist Elaine Quijano will moderate the 2016 vice presidential debate, the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates, and her news organization, CBS News, announced. CBSN anchor and CBS News correspondent Quijano will be the first Asian American journalist to moderate a national debate in a general election campaign and the first anchor of a digital network to do so, reports Inquirer.net.
