Filipino Crewmen Unpaid Since April, in 'Dire' Straits

An Australian trade union accused owners of the bulk carrier AOM Milena of not paying the crew of 21 Filipinos since April and forcing them to live and work in “filthy conditions” where they were also running short of food. The crew’s situation came to light when AOM Milena docked in Gladstone, Australia this week, where it serves an aluminum refinery, reports Inquirer.net.

IMF Slashes PH Growth Forecast

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has slashed its growth projections for the Philippine economy this year amid weak state spending, which stunted the country’s performance in the first quarter, reports Inquirer.net. IMF said weak global demand for exports, and the effects of dry weather on the agricultural sector would drag on the economy’s prospects. For 2015, the IMF said it sees Philippine gross domestic product (GDP) rising by 6.2 percent, before accelerating to 6.5 percent in 2016.

Filipino American inspirational speaker Jessica Cox’s film, “Right Footed,” won the best documentary film award at the Mirabile Dictu Film Festival in Vatican City. “Right Footed” received the “Il Pesce d’Argento” (The Silver Fish) for Best Documentary film at the 6th International Catholic Film Festival held from June 22 to June at the Vatican, reports Inquirer.net.
