Filipino Professor Named to UN Experts Working Group

A Filipino law professor was appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Council to the UN Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent. Prof. Ricardo Sunga III's appointment was confirmed on November 6 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. Sunga will represent the Asia Pacific states at the said working group of experts, reports ABS-CBN News.

Canada Reforms Caregiver Program to Deter Abuse

Immigration Minister Chris Alexander announced an end to the live-in requirement, making it optional for caregivers and their employers, to prevent abuses. A Philippine-trained physical therapist is now the first Filipino to be on the medical staff of teams from the National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball, reports GMA News. Erwin Valencia, who studied at University of the Philippines-Manila and De La Salle Zobel, is now a physical therapist and assistant athletic trainer for the New York Knicks in the NBA.

 

20 Fil-Ams Win in San Francisco Bay Area Elections

Up to 20 Filipino Americans have won seats in the last November 4 local elections in the San Francisco Bay Area, reports Inquirer.net. Leading the batch are incumbent Assembly Member Rob Bonta (District 18) who won re-election to the state legislative body, West Sacramento Mayor Christopher Cabaldon and Milpitas Mayor Jose Esteves, who also won re-election. Mayor of Suisun City Pete Sanchez was unopposed.
