Filipino Seaman Dies in Los Angeles Port Accident

A 39-year-old Filipino crew member of a container ship was found dead June 18, Wednesday night at the Port of Los Angeles, reports Inquirer.net. Initial investigation by the Port Police and the Federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration showed that the victim died from blunt force trauma to the head after a cable broke on the ship while containers were being moved.

Filipinos in Iraq Told to Leave Now

Citing the rapidly deteriorating security situation in Iraq, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on June 19 called on all Filipinos in the country to get out as soon as possible, reports Inquirer.net. The DFA raised Crisis Alert Level 4 (mandatory repatriation) in Iraq, setting off evacuation procedures at Philippine government expense.

Japan Eases Issuance of Visas for Filipinos

The Japanese Embassy has eased the issuance of visas to Filipinos wanting to visit the Land of the Rising Sun, reports Interaksyon.com. This is in line with Japan’s campaign to attract more tourists. Aside from the Filipinos, visa requirements were also eased for Indonesians and Vietnamese.

Filipino consumers are  the world’s most socially conscious consumers of goods and services, according to a new study by Nielsen, a global information and insights company, reports Rappler.com. Nielsen found that  8 in 10 consumers in the Philippines, or 79 precent, are more willing to pay extra for products and services from companies committed to making positive social and environmental impact. This is the highest globally.

Two Filipinos Arrested in Dubai for Cross-Dressing

A fashion designer and a tailor have been jailed for one month each for wearing women’s clothes and underwear. at a Dubai Metro station, reports Gulf News. A policeman arrested the 34-year-old Filipino designer, A.F., and his 44-year-old countryman tailor, W.L., at Al Rigga Metro Station in March. The defendants will be deported following the completion of their jail terms.

Remittance Growth Slows Down

Remittances from Filipinos abroad grew by 5.2 percent in April—the slowest pace so far this year—even as the demand for skilled Filipino workers in overseas job markets remained robust, reports Inquirer.net. Personal remittances grew slower compared with January’s 6.8-percent growth, according to the Central Bank.

First Month of Overseas Voter Registration Breaks Record

A “record breaking” number of overseas Filipino voters registrants during the first month of registration for the 2016 elections, says the Department of Foreign Affairs. The DFA's Overseas Voting Secretariat (DFA-OVS) counted 18,631 new overseas voters processed by various Philippine posts around the world during the month of May, reports GMA News.
