Poultry in Motion

What happens when twelve inebriated teenage boys get exceedingly hungry at 10 o'clock on a hot and humid night? They get into mischief, of course. In this lengthy but laugh-out-loud funny piece "Which Comes First, the Chicken, or the Scruples?", first-time contributor Albert J. Lesaca provides the lurid details of a prank that exploded out of control and eventually entered the annals of UP (University of the Philippines) campus lore in the '60s. He was one of them so he knows whereof he speaks.

A powerful book by E.J.R. David titled "We Have Not Stopped Trembling Yet: Letters to My Filipino-Athabascan Family" is reviewed by Jen Soriano, writing it as a letter to her four-year-old son. The book is one of the very few that focuses on the life of an "Eskipino" (a mix of Eskimo and Filipino) family and the historical trauma and oppressive colonization that accompany a minority community in America.

And speaking of colonization, here's a fitting Read Again from poet/author/academic Oscar Penaranda who writes about how he was reconciled with an authentic flag from the Philippine-American War, a long-lost flag that had his grandfather's name literally on it. Florentino Peñaranda, the grandfather, was one of the last combatants of the war for Philippine Independence to surrender to the Americans at the turn of the 20th century.

Papal Protection

Bishop Pablo Virgilio David (better known as Bishop Ambo) of the Caloocan diocese has been getting death threats, ostensibly from people unhappy about his speaking out against the extra-judicial killings (EJK)  happening in his territory. When in the Vatican recently to attend a meeting of Filipino bishops with Pope Francis, the Holy Father gave Bishop Ambo valuable affirmation. Read his Facebook post about the memorable encounter, "Confirmed by Peter's Embrace."

A Filipino American named CyreneQ is a certified sensation on Snapchat as she enthralls her more than 200,000 followers with her stories, art and advise. PF Correspondent Anthony Maddela explores the often overlooked Filipina side of this social media influencer in "Another Side of CyreneQ."

World traveler Bella Bonner gets real about visiting Peru's high-altitude attractions: the city of Cusco and the heritage site of Machu Picchu. Despite the breathing challenges, she still considers Cusco as one of her favorite cities.

Pottery and Pan de Sal

Pasil, a small town in the mountains of Kalinga province, is distinguished for two things: it's listed as part of the European slow food movement for its indigenous dishes, and  a barrio under its jurisdiction, Dangtalan, boasts of beautiful clay pottery shaped entirely by hand. In "A Village Called Dangtalan," Baguio-based contributor Lourdes Guieb-Demetillo gives us a glimpse of the cultural riches of this remote, little-known spot in northern Luzon.

Culinary historian Felice P. Sta. Maria returns with "Origins of our Daily Breads," which traces not only the etymology of the word "tinapay" but the evolution of Filipinos' love for "pan."

PF Correspondent Lisa Suguitan-Melnick writes about one of the stalwarts of the Filipino American community in San Francisco -- Juanita Tamayo-Lott, poet, activist, public policy expert, philanthropist, among other involvements. Surely a "Woman Warrior of the Golden State," who begins her 8th decade with yet another "reinvention" as she moves closer to her family in Seattle.

We celebrate another outstanding woman in the arts this week -- Nora Aunor, the Philippines' only superstar. Read Again "The Timeless Nora Aunor," the tribute written by film critic/cultural worker Mauro Feria Tumbucon Jr.

For the Happy Home Cook this week, our San Francisco-based foodie Voltaire Gungab comes up with another yummy recipe: Tablea Chocolate, Cashew and Coconut Cake.
